Project Overview
Artistic Vision
The Centre Pompidou collaborated with artists and students to explore how artworks can be reimagined and embedded into the digital world. For this project, our team chose Salon Adam, a room designed by Yaacov Agam for the Élysée Palace and later moved to the Pompidou Museum, where it remains part of the permanent collection. Inspired by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and global museum closures in March 2020, we asked ourselves how art could still be experienced in times without physical access to cultural spaces. Our goal was not simply to digitize an artwork, but to reimagine how people might interact with it in new, participatory ways. The result was a mixed-reality experience that allowed audiences to influence the environment directly, shifting the digital room between states of chaos and order using their own mobile devices.
Technical Innovation
The experience was realized through Unity 3D, where we developed a two-application system: a desktop version presenting the immersive artwork and a mobile app acting as a real-time controller. These two platforms communicated through network protocols, enabling seamless interaction between participants and the virtual environment. By blending artistic storytelling with technical experimentation, the project demonstrated how digital tools can transform passive observation into active engagement, bridging the gap between the physical museum space and a new form of collective digital experience.
Technical Implementation
Concept Reference
Inspired by Yaacov Agam’s vestibule at Centre Pompidou — geometry and white space imply motion between order and chaos.
Visitor Control
Central sculpture is rotatable to toggle the system between order and chaos; the view updates in real time.
Chorus Panels
Panels along the bottom act as a chorus/filter, echoing the original artwork and reflecting the current state.
Mobile Interaction
A companion mobile app opens the scene to each visitor for direct manipulation of state and viewpoint.
Chaos Mode
In chaos, a phone shake triggers digital glitches; further rotation transitions back to order.
Return to Order
Order mode amplifies colour and structure — a vivid “blossom” state that resolves the interaction.
